YSP Recognizes World Suicide Prevention Day 2016

“Connect. Communicate. Care”

September 10th, 2016

The Community Mobilization Youth Suicide Prevention Action Group (YSP) is a community collaborative sub-group under the larger Durham Child and Youth Planning Network (DCYPN).  The YSP Action Group started as a grassroots effort motivated by an opportunity presented by the Ministry of Child and Youth Services in 2013.  MCYS offered funding to communities, as a means of mobilizing communities to work together to address the problem of youth suicide. Durham Region has grown a collaborative of over 21 members at this time, representing the various sectors of education, community based mental health, hospitals, youth justice, faith, addictions, and business.  The group continues to seek recruitment from people with lived experience as a voice desired on the collaborative action group.

The following is an outline of successes and next steps for the YSP Action Group, in an effort to build a “suicide safer community.”

Current successes of the group have been:

  • Bringing together members of the community from various sectors and representation who are invested in youth suicide prevention, including support from the provincial Youth Suicide Prevention Coach, provided by the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Children and Youth.

  • Launching the Durham-specific Be Safe App, a resource for children and youth experiencing crisis. The app is also now available in the French language.

  • Supporting all sectors to recognize youth at risk of suicide, along with providing sustainability by ensuring all sectors have trained trainers. YSP has provided opportunity for free safeTALK and Train the Trainer trainings.  By the end of September, free safeTALK trainings will have been offered in five regions of Durham.

  • Observing and supporting World Suicide Prevention Day on an annual basis.

Current next steps for the group will be:

  • Releasing of the Community Report on Youth Suicide Prevention in Durham Region to identify the community, organization, and individual needs and strengths pertaining to youth suicide prevention in the Durham Region as discussed through community forums.

  • Developing the New Mentality Youth Group for Durham Region, an effort to provide an opportunity to engage with youth in a preventative manner.

  • Releasing the 2016/17 YSP Strategic Plan, focusing on the model supported by the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Children and Youth.
